Apple Nachos

When we were stationed in Washington, we had apples galore to choose from. They were picked right off the tree and eaten. Talk about fresh! When we were stationed in Ohio while my husband was recruiting, every year we would visit an apple orchard and collect a bushel of apples to take home.

I am always excited when Fall arrives because that means it’s apple season again! Apples are such a healthy treat. They are extremely rich in important antioxidants. Our kids love apples and my husband says they are nature’s toothbrush (ew!).

Here are some reasons to bite into a juicy apple:

  1. Helping with Weight loss
  2. Lowing risk of heart disease
  3. Lower risk of diabetes
  4. Promote good gut bacteria
  5. Help to prevent cancer
  6. Help Fight Asthma
  7. Great for bone health
  8. Help to protect your brain from old age

This is a short list of benefits of eating apples, but there are so many more! Referring to the list of benefits, as you can see, that old saying, “An Apple A day” could very well be true in many cases! The problem is we often want something different for a snack. Eating an apple just as they come can get boring, especially to kids. That’s when we begin searching for new ways to serve simple foods. Unfortunately, we can’t serve apple pie all the time.

In this installment, we are creating a new spin on apple season and make some Apple Nachos! These are easy to make and they are incredibly fun to create with your children while making memories! If you have teens, they can do the slicing. Younger kids can help in the kitchen as well! If your kids haven’t learned how to use a knife properly yet, slice the apples for them and begin. You will love making them (and eating them), too!
